How Much XRP Sits Idle? Dormant Supply and the Cost of Doing Nothing (2026)

By XORA · Published

Roughly 60 billion of the 62.47 billion XRP in circulation earns 0 percent, about 65.3 billion USD at the snapshot price of 1.089 USD (CoinGecko, 2026-07-20). At illustrative rates of 4, 8, and 15 percent, that idle stack forgoes about 2.61, 5.22, and 9.80 billion USD of yield every year. Another 35.3 billion XRP cannot earn anything at all: it is locked inside Ripple's escrow.

A supply level question, not a personal one

We already published a per holder version of this math. The annual cost of holding XRP idle walks through what one specific balance forfeits each year with daily compounding tables. This post asks the opposite question: across the entire asset, how many XRP earn nothing, and what does that dormancy cost in aggregate? Every figure below was fetched on 20 July 2026 or derived with the math shown.

Three sources anchor the stack: CoinGecko for price and supply, the XRP Ledger public server at s1.ripple.com for the exact XRP in existence, and XRPScan's rich list API for escrow balances and labeled exchange holdings across the top 10,000 accounts (every account down to about 235,767 XRP).

Where every XRP sits in 2026

Start from the protocol. 100 billion XRP were created at genesis; transaction costs destroy a little forever. Validated ledger 105,725,902, closed at 10:11 UTC on 20 July 2026, reported total_coins of 99,985,635,606.87 XRP: 14,364,393 XRP burned since 2012, about 0.01 percent of genesis. CoinGecko's total supply of 99,985,639,695 XRP matches the ledger within about 4,100 XRP.

From there, the existing supply splits into four large blocks:

Two definitional notes keep this honest. First, CoinGecko's circulating supply of 62,466,503,703 XRP is stricter than "everything not escrowed" (64,540,120,347 XRP by our math); the 2.07 billion gap is supply CoinGecko excludes beyond escrow, most plausibly other Ripple controlled funds. Second, all other holders includes unlabeled exchange cold wallets, so the labeled exchange figure is a floor, not a ceiling.

Ripple's escrow: 35.3 billion XRP locked at 0 percent

The largest dormant block is escrow. Escrow objects tied to 25 labeled Ripple accounts hold exactly 35,300,000,000 XRP, with the same accounts keeping 3.62 billion spendable. Total escrowed XRP across the top 10,000 accounts is 35,445,515,260; the largest non Ripple entry is the Flare Core Vault at 140 million. At 1.089 USD, Ripple's escrowed stack is worth about 38.4 billion USD.

Escrowed XRP is idle by protocol design: it cannot be sent, lent, or deposited until each escrow matures. As the crypto.news escrow guide describes, about 1 billion XRP unlocks on the first of each month, Ripple typically places 600 to 800 million back into new escrows within days, and the net flow into circulation has generally been 200 to 300 million XRP per month. Estimates elsewhere of "near 38 billion" count differently; ours is the sum of live escrow objects in our snapshot.

Exchanges: at least 15.5 billion XRP parked on custodial books

Matching XRPScan's labeled accounts against its rich list gives a measurable floor for exchange custody: 96 labeled exchange accounts held 15,545,062,579 XRP on 20 July 2026, about 16.9 billion USD at the snapshot price, or 24.9 percent of circulating supply. Four venues dominate:

Labeled exchange XRP holdings on the XRPScan rich list, 20 July 2026 Horizontal bars show Upbit at 6.42 billion XRP, Binance 2.60 billion, Bithumb 1.85 billion, Uphold 1.64 billion, and all other labeled exchanges 3.03 billion, totaling 15.55 billion XRP. Nearly all of this XRP belongs to customers, and on most venues it earns them nothing while carrying the counterparty exposure we quantified in crypto exchange failures by the numbers. Idle plus custodial risk is the worst combination: all of the exposure, none of the compensation.

How much XRP actually earns anything?

Against those blocks, measured productive XRP is startlingly small. Summing the XRP side of the top 1,000 XRP paired AMM pools from XRPScan's AMM API gives 10,662,433 XRP earning trading fees on ledger, about 0.017 percent of circulating supply; the largest single pool holds 2.76 million XRP. DefiLlama independently puts total XRPL DeFi TVL at 32,560,376 USD, roughly 29.9 million XRP equivalent at 1.089 USD, and that figure counts both sides of every pool.

Off ledger yield is harder to see: CeFi lending books, wrapped XRP, and platform programs like the ones we compare in our yield guide publish no reliable XRP denominated totals. Rather than guess, we grant a deliberately oversized allowance and let the headline stand on a floor.

Assumptions behind the headline number

The headline math: roughly 60 billion XRP earns nothing

Subtract the allowance from circulating supply: 62,466,503,703 minus 2,500,000,000 leaves 59,966,503,703 XRP, roughly 60 billion, earning 0 percent. That is 96 percent of every circulating XRP. At 1.089 USD it is worth 65,303,522,533 USD, about 65.3 billion. Widen the lens to everything that exists, escrow included, and more than 97 of every 100 XRP earn nothing today.

Priced at three illustrative rates, the dormancy bill looks like this:

Illustrative rateForgone XRP per yearForgone USD per year
4% (typical CeFi lending)2.40 billion XRP2.61 billion USD
8% (upper lending and AMM range)4.80 billion XRP5.22 billion USD
15% (XORA native XRP yield component)8.99 billion XRP9.80 billion USD

The arithmetic is transparent: 59,966,503,703 XRP times 1.089 USD gives the base of 65.30 billion USD, then multiply by each rate. The exchange slice alone, 15.55 billion XRP worth 16.93 billion USD, forgoes about 677 million USD a year at 4 percent, 1.35 billion at 8 percent, and 2.54 billion at 15 percent.

Annual USD yield forgone by roughly 60 billion idle XRP at three rates Green bars show 2.61 billion USD forgone per year at 4 percent, 5.22 billion at 8 percent, and 9.80 billion at 15 percent, on 59.97 billion idle XRP priced at 1.089 USD. 2.5B 5.0B 7.5B 2.61B USD 5.22B USD 9.80B USD at 4% at 8% at 15% Yield forgone yearly on about 60 billion idle XRP at 1.089 USD
The takeaway: every year 60 billion XRP stays at 0 percent, holders collectively forgo 2.61 to 9.80 billion USD depending on the achievable rate. Simple interest, snapshot price, assumptions as stated.

An opportunity cost, not a fee

Nobody sends holders an invoice for this. Idle XRP keeps its quantity; what disappears is the compounding that never happens. Scaled down, the math turns personal fast: at 8 percent, 10,000 idle XRP forgoes about 800 XRP a year, roughly 871 USD at the snapshot price. Our XRP yield calculator runs that math for any balance, and the idle tax post extends it over multiple years with daily compounding.

The aggregate view explains why the number is stable. Escrow cannot earn by protocol rule, exchange balances earn nothing by commercial default, and measured AMM liquidity absorbs about 0.017 percent of circulating supply. Idle is not an edge case in XRP; it is the norm.

What holders of idle XRP can actually do

The options fall into the categories we compared in how to earn yield on XRP: XRPL AMM liquidity with impermanent loss risk, CeFi lending with counterparty risk, cross chain DeFi with bridge risk, or an XRP neobank. XORA's current offer is up to 22% APY value (15% native XRP yield, treasury subsidised during a disclosed bootstrap, plus estimated XORA reward value), with no fixed lockup and custody safeguards documented on the security page.

Risk disclosure, briefly and honestly: crypto assets are volatile, custody creates counterparty risk, rates and reward values can change, the XORA reward component is not native XRP, and no yield is guaranteed. Whatever platform you choose, verify what funds the yield, start small, and never deposit more than you can afford to lose.

FAQ

How much XRP sits idle in 2026?

Roughly 60 billion of the 62.47 billion circulating XRP earns 0 percent, worth about 65.3 billion USD at the 20 July 2026 CoinGecko price of 1.089 USD. That floor already assumes a deliberately generous 2.5 billion XRP is earning something across AMMs, lending, and yield platforms, even though measured XRPL AMM pools hold only about 10.7 million XRP.

How much XRP is locked in Ripple's escrow?

As of 20 July 2026, escrow objects tied to 25 labeled Ripple accounts on the XRPScan rich list hold 35.30 billion XRP, about 38.4 billion USD at 1.089 USD. Roughly 1 billion XRP unlocks on the first of each month, and 600 to 800 million of it is typically placed into new escrows within days.

How much XRP do exchanges hold?

At least 15.55 billion XRP sat in 96 labeled exchange accounts on the XRPScan rich list on 20 July 2026: Upbit 6.42 billion, Binance 2.60 billion, Bithumb 1.85 billion, Uphold 1.64 billion, plus 3.03 billion across other labeled venues. This is a lower bound because unlabeled cold wallets are not counted.

Does idle XRP actually lose money?

The XRP quantity does not shrink, so the loss is an opportunity cost rather than a fee. At an 8 percent rate, a 10,000 XRP balance left at 0 percent forgoes about 800 XRP a year, roughly 871 USD at the 1.089 USD snapshot price. Across the whole idle stack that adds up to billions of dollars of forgone yield annually.

Can escrowed XRP earn yield?

No. XRP inside an escrow object is locked by the protocol until the escrow finishes or is cancelled under its own conditions. It cannot be sent, lent, or deposited anywhere while locked. Only after release can that XRP move, and historically most of each monthly release goes straight back into new escrows.
